Attractions around Shimoga
Bhadravathi is a small industrial town on the banks of river Bhadra. You'll cross this town just before entering Shimoga city.
The 13th century CE Lakshmi Narasimha temple in Bhadravathi was built by Veera Narasimha, the Grandson of Vishnuvardhana, the most famous of all the Hoysala kings. Halladamma Devi Temple is considered as the largest shrine of the Malnad Region. Also the large Shiva image installed near Huttha, at a popular attraction.
The sprawling Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary a protected forest area and a tiger reserve, located south of Shimoga.
Thirthahalli, some 60km southwest of Shimoga is a historic and pilgrimage site. Sri Rameshwara Temple at Thirthahalli is a significant pilgrimage site. Kavaledurga Fort is about 20 km west of Thirthahalli.
Kundadri, about 9km off the Agumbe to Thirthahalli road is has an ancient Jain Basadi at the mountain top with natural pools. Tackle the diversion at Guddekeri on the Agumbe road.
Ambuthirtha is 10 km off the Thirthahalli on Hosanagara road, is the birthplace of the river Sharavathi, the river that makes the Jog Falls.
Kuppahalli,16 km east of Thirthahalli is the birthplace of the legendary Kannada poet popularly known by his pen name 'KUVEMPU' (Kuppalli Venkatappa Puttappa)'
If you are driving to Udupi direction from Shimoga, you'll cross the Western Ghats at Agumbe. It's about 90km southwest of Shimoga. Trekking spots like Onake Abbi Falls, Someshwara etc are near to Agumbe ghat.
