Bangalore to Ooty by Road

Bengaluru → Mysuru → Gundlupet → Bandipur → Theppakadu junction → via Masinagudi (option 1) or via Gudalur (option 2) → Thalaikundha junction→ Ooty.

here are two popular routes to Ooty: option 1 via Masinagudi and option 2 via Gudalur.

Both routes converge at Theppakadu junction, and the only difference is the 30km stretch from Theppakadu to Thalaikundha junction. Via Masinagudi, it's a 30km drive, and via Gudalur, it's 60km.

Consider the following factors when choosing between the two routes:

The climb is gradual from Gudalur to Ooty.
Traffic is not allowed at night through the national park (9 pm to 6 am).
Via Masinagudi:

Masinagudi is a popular wilderness resort.
Bison Valley viewpoint, jeep safari starting point.
Shorter & fast route to Ooty.
Well-maintained narrow road, steep climbs, many hairpins.
Limited rest points until you reach the pericuts of Ooty.
The last 10 km is a steep climb with 36 challenging hairpin bends.
Traffic is not allowed at night (9 pm to 6 am). Driving is only permitted one way (towards Ooty).

Wider & easier to drive compared to the Masinagudi road.

Traffic is typically low, and the road is well-maintained.

Take the Bangalore-Mysore expressway (NH275) towards Mysore.
At Mysore, exit onto the ring road (NH 766) towards Ooty via Gundlupet.
After Gundlupet, enter the Bandipur National Park, leading to Theppakadu junction.
The diversion point at Theppakadu lets you choose between the two routes.
Route Options:

Bengaluru to Ooty via Gudalur: 300km, 7 hrs drive.
Bengaluru to Ooty via Masinagudi: 270km, 6 hrs drive.
Tip:
Plan to go via the Masinagudi route and return via Gudalur for the best experience.
Consider pitstops like Pug Mark restaurant and Theppakadu tourist area, specifically the Banyan Restaurant, for a pleasant journey.
Traffic through the national park is closed at night (9 pm to 6 am).
